TX - 62' AC30 Copper Panel
THE HOLY GRAIL
We are thrilled to present one of the rarest and most coveted amplifiers in history: a fully original 1962 Vox AC30 Copper Panel, complete with the factory-installed Top Boost modification. Without question, this is the most quintessentially "AC30" sounding example we've ever had the honor of playing—pure, iconic British chime and harmonic richness in every note.
Dating to 1962, this amp represents an early transitional masterpiece in Vox's legendary lineage. As rock 'n' roll exploded in the early '60s, players demanded more cut and presence to battle roaring crowds. While JMI staunchly defended their 30-watt, 2x12 design as sufficiently powerful, they ingeniously responded with the Top Boost circuit—a brilliant addition that delivered sparkling highs without sacrificing the amp's warm, vocal midrange.
Originally offered as a factory modification kit in late 1961 and 1962, Top Boost added an extra EF86 preamp tube wired into the Brilliant channel, unlocking that signature shimmering treble that defined countless classic recordings across genres. This sound became utterly iconic. By 1963, Vox made Top Boost standard, integrating it into the front panel (initially copper, later grey) and shifting away from the EF86 tube.
What makes this particular amp extraordinarily special? It arrived from the factory loaded with a pair of the earliest Vox Alnico Silver Bell speakers—delivering that legendary bell-like clarity, smooth breakup, and effortless dynamics that modern recreations often chase but rarely capture.
To provide the ultimate AC30 experience in this ToneX capture pack, we captured the amp through three distinct cabinet configurations:
The original 2x12 with Alnico Silver Bells for authentic vintage sparkle and warmth.
Celestion G12M-25 Greenbacks (6402 cone era) for classic midrange bite and crunch.
Bad Cat custom Celestion speakers, renowned for their exceptional pairing with Vox-style tones—blending tight lows, punchy mids, and sweet highs.
These captures nail the elusive Top Boost magic you've been seeking. Many attempts at recreating this era exaggerate the treble while thinning the lows, but not here. The boosted top end sings with brilliance, yet it's perfectly balanced by lush, embracing low-mids that give the amp its addictive, three-dimensional character.
This ToneX V2 Capture pack is 32 of our best captures of this amp.
